Scosha Loves – Alé Tarver

September 19, 2016

ARTIST AND CURATOR ALEXANDRIA TARVER IS A FELLOW BROOKLYN RESIDENT AND CURRENT INSPIRATION. INTRODUCED TO US BY OUR GOOD FRIEND AND AUTHOR ANDREA LINETT, ALE WAS A PERFECT FIT TO MODEL FOR OUR SPRING/SUMMER CAMPAIGN. WHILE ON SET SHE GAVE US A FIRST LOOK INTO THE ENERGY SHE CHANNELS INTO HER PAINTINGS, AND SHARED SOME OF HER MEMORIES, THOUGHTS AND DREAMS OF TRAVEL.

What does traveling mean to you?

Traveling to me is anything that involves going somewhere and involving myself in a space outside my normal daily commute. I work really long hours between my work and keeping up my painting practice that it’s hard for me to take time to get out of my normal routine, so I appreciate every chance I get. One of the greatest things about living in New York City is that there is so much to discover here without having to go too far. I bike a lot in the city, and riding along the river, to parks, uptown, over bridges — all this gives me my daily dose of travel and sense of freedom without having to go to an airport or Penn Station.

What has been your best adventure?

Last year when I spent a week in New Orleans with my boyfriend and absolutely nothing to do. We stayed in our friend Spider Stacy’s house in the Tremé. That whole week was a wild ride. We just wandered around for days, admiring the gorgeous old houses, drinking Bloody Marys on the street, eating po boys, listening to brass bands, getting swept up in parades. There was one night where we ended up in an old school bus-turned-party-bus fully equipped with dancing poles, drinks, and loud music that drove us around for an hour. That was something. I love New Orleans and can’t wait to go back again.

What are you always sure to collect while traveling and why?

I always find myself gravitating towards buying small dishes and ceramics whenever I’m in a new place. I almost lost my mind when I was at a market in Mexico City last spring with all the little soap dishes and tiny bowls they had! I just love getting things that are small, inexpensive, and something I can use in daily life to remind me of the time there.

What's a song that makes you want to hit the road?

The best beach you’ve ever been to?

My favorite beach is Cape May, New Jersey. I feel like what makes a beach perfect or memorable is more the people you’re with and how you spend your time there rather than the color of the sand or water. My boyfriend and I go to Cape May in the summer with his family to lay on the sand, eat chocolate ices, read books, nap, talk, and swim. It’s heaven.

A place you dream of one day visiting?

Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey.

What is your favorite Scosha piece?

I love SCOSHA's Fiesta Lariat Necklace from the Samba Collection. Usually when I purchase a piece of jewelry, I do it to mark an occasion or as a mark of remembrance. That gives the piece to me an energy and a reason to wear it as much as possible. The delicacy and personal nature of the luxury on the Fiesta Lariat Necklace are so elegantly handled in the making and design, and stylistically it’s super versatile. All of Scosha’s jewelry is made with a real sense of play, joy, and love. That’s what I like to wear.
